Barclaycard to introduce contactless debit cards

Barclaycard has announced that from March 2009 most of the debit cards they issue or reissue will feature their contactless technology as standard.

According to the card provider's calculations, more than three million people could be using its contactless technology by the end of the year.

The technology aims to make card payments quicker and easier by enabling card users to pay for anything costing under £10 without putting their card in a slot or entering a pin number.

Mark Parsons, managing director of current accounts for Barclays, said: "This gives people a new way to pay for things that is quick, secure and convenient and we are confident that it is going to be really popular with customers."

Barclaycard announced that it had issued its one millionth contactless credit card recently and said that 88 per cent of users said the technology speeded up payments for day to day items like coffee.
