Sainsbury's Home Insurance: Many Brits planning to leave houses unoccupied

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has conducted research which shows that many Brits are planning to leave their houses unoccupied as they take extended breaks abroad to escape the doom and gloom of the current economic climate in the UK.

According to the supermarket insurer, 1.72 million people over the age of 55 plan to spend a month or more away from home over the next year, potentially leaving their houses at increased risk from burglars.

Sainsbury's Home Insurance warned those taking extended breaks to check their insurance policies as its research showed that 37 per cent do not cover household contents if the home is left unoccupied for more than 30 days at a time.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "This really is essential and even applies if you have arranged for a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on the house."

Abbey released research recently which showed that the recession is likely to cause an increase in the number of domestic burglaries.
