Sainsbury's Bank: Treating pet's teeth costs £21m a year

Research by Sainsbury's Bank has revealed that UK pet owners are shelling out an estimated total of £21 million per year on their animals' dental care bills.

The supermarket financial services provider conducted a survey which showed that 74 per cent of cats and dogs in the UK are not insured by their owners, meaning that last year 2.5 million people had to turn down dental care for their pets because they could not afford it.

Sainsbury's Bank also found that 63 per cent of pet insurance policies do not cover dental care for both injury and illness, meaning even some of those who have insured their animals are left paying.

Neal Devine, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance manager, said: "The cost of treatment shouldn't be underestimated as the average cost of treatment for a dog or cat with gum or dental disease is in the region of £150 - £250."

Recent research by Zurich and LV= has revealed that many people are cutting down on insurance that they believe to be non-essential because of the credit crunch.
