ABI hails car insurance plans

Those who do not pay for car insurance are more likely to cause accidents on the road, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed.

The insurance industry body made the statement this week as it welcomed new plans from the government to punish uninsured drivers more severely.

Indeed, the ABI has requested that the government presses ahead and introduces the new system as soon as it can.

It said that the insurance industry has long been working closely with authorities to help deal with those who continue to drive illegally without cover.

"Uninsured drivers are not only flouting the law, but are much more likely to cause a crash," the association continued.

Under the new scheme, drivers who are found to be without an insurance policy for their vehicle will be hit with a £100 penalty.

Those who still do not take out an insurance policy will see their cars towed away and destroyed.
