Zurich reveals rise in critical illness claims

Zurich has revealed an increase in the number of critical illness claims paid out during 2008.

The insurer received 746 worthy claims over the last 12 months, compared with 710 in 2007.

A total of £58.5 million was subsequently paid out during the course of the year, with just nine per cent of claims rejected by the firm.

Phil Brown, Zurich UK Life's underwriting and claims director, declared himself proud of the group's "proven track record" in quick payouts.

"We understand how important it is for consumers to be able to … have the peace of mind from knowing that their claim is being dealt with as efficiently as possible," he commented.

Such service could make a "massive difference" to people and help raise awareness of the benefits of taking out mortgage or family protection, he added.

Zurich also claimed today that the government's decision to introduce more stringent penalties for uninsured drivers "should be welcomed by us all".
