Sainsbury's Home Insurance records water damage increase

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has identified an increase in the number of claims relating to water damage in the past few weeks.

According to the provider, there have been around 13,000 claims of this nature during the winter, totalling an estimated £27.56 million.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said that the rise owes much to the recent drop in temperatures to as low as minus ten degrees C.

The retail bank advises that as well as ensuring a good level of cover is in place, homeowners can prepare themselves for the worst by insulating pipes and making sure the main stopcock can easily be turned on and off.

Additionally, those heading away for a winter break should leave the heating on at a low setting, as warm water needs to be kept circulating.

The bank recently reported that 28 per cent of the UK's adult population intend to book a holiday between Christmas and the end of February 2009.
