HSBC issues payments advice to travellers

With an Apacs study revealing that overseas card fraud accounts for two-fifths of all card losses, HSBC has advised British travellers to take steps to protect themselves.

Spokesman for the bank Tim Pie said that many people let their guard down on holiday as they are in a more relaxed mood, but by taking precautions they can minimise the risk of card fraud.

For example, travellers should inform their bank to let them know that they are heading abroad.

Additionally, they should keep their mobile phones with them at all times, as many banks will contact the customer should they need to block a transaction.

Taking different forms of payment is also advisable. "The good old traveller's cheque is still a good fall back," suggested Mr Pie.

Apacs' study shows there has been a 190 per cent increase in losses incurred on UK-issued cards abroad over the last three years.
