Age Concern calls on government to help pensioners

Age Concern has called upon the government to ensure that the poorest pensioners are receiving the full amount of benefit they are entitled to following the release of figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) yesterday.

The charity said that pensioners are being "hit hard at the moment" as the ONS figures showed that over-75s spend an average of 40 per cent of their weekly outgoings on covering essential living costs.

Age Concern added that in the current economic climate it is "simply not good enough" that up to £5 billion in benefits is failing to reach these hard hit pensioners.

It added: "The Government must focus its attention on helping the poorest pensioners through the recession and move quickly towards paying money benefits automatically to all those entitled."

Age Concern criticised the government's pre-budget report when it was published last year, claiming that many pensioners would not feel the benefits of the economic stimulus measures designed to help the country through the recession.
