Bankers 'must regain people's trust'

A bankers association has issued a statement saying that banking professionals must work to regain the trust of the general public.

At a meeting of the Worshipful Company of International bankers, Henry Angest, the master of the company, told the assembled crowd - which included David Cameron - that bankers had to "re-emphasise the fundamentals of trust, integrity and honesty" in order to restore faith in the banking system.

Mr Angest admitted that some individuals had brought the whole of the banking profession into disrepute, but claimed that bankers remained committed to ensuring that their institutions played their proper role in society.

Alderman Ian Luder, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, added that bankers should become involved in the creation of the new regulatory architecture which will govern their practices following the credit crunch.

Last year prime minister Gordon Brown called upon banks and building societies to "behave responsibly" towards consumers.
