Standard Life: Retirement attitudes changing

Standard Life, a pensions and savings account provider, has conducted research which reveals that attitudes to retirement are changing in the UK.

The study reveals that the generation currently approaching retirement is expecting to be far more active in their old-age than in previous eras.

Over half of 46 to 65-year-olds are planning to travel more in their long term future, rising to two-thirds of those who are more affluent. In contrast, only 23 per cent of their parents' generation planned to travel more at retirement.

John Lawson, head of pensions policy at Standard Life, said: "Our research proves that baby boomers' attitudes to retirement have fundamentally changed and they are now more ambitious for this 'third stage' of their life than any generation before them."

Recently, Dr Ros Altmann, a pensions expert, warned that the baby boomer generation will place an increased strain on the government's old age pension provisions as they are expected to live longer than previous generations.
