Abbey Mortgages: Baby boomerangers returning to the nest

Abbey Mortgages has uncovered a growing group of young people living with their parents in order to save money during the credit crunch.

The mortgage provider conducted a survey which revealed that 20 per cent of 18-24 year olds in the UK either returned home to live with their parents or put off their plans to fly the nest last year.

Abbey Mortgages has dubbed these young people who are choosing to return to the family fold the 'baby boomeranger' generation.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, director of Abbey Mortgages, said: "While returning home or delaying your plans to move out might feel like a sacrifice, it's actually a great opportunity to save enough money to put down a deposit on a property of your own."

Recent research by Alliance & Leicester revealed that the credit crunch has not stopped people saving money towards a deposit on a house, with two-thirds of Brits claiming they managed to save something last year.
