Halifax Home Insurance issues weather-beating advice

Halifax Home Insurance has issued advice to homeowners on how to stop the floods and snowstorms currently affecting the UK from damaging houses.

The advice includes putting sandbags around doors, airbricks and windows if the house is at risk of flooding and cutting low-hanging branches off trees if storms are approaching.

Halifax Home Insurance estimated that a typical claim for storm damage can cost around £1,000 while claims for flood damage often top £20,000.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "We have seen some of the worst snowy and icy conditions for decades recently and now winter storms, heavy rain and more snow pose a considerable threat to many homes in England and Wales, particularly in southern regions."

Recently, the AA revealed that the snow which affected much of the UK last week had caused a large increase in the number of car insurance claims.
