Norwich Union building insurance code of practice launched

Norwich Union has announced the launch of the Code of Practice for the Protection of Empty Buildings, which offers guidelines to those leaving property empty for extended periods of time.

The document, produced in conjunction with the Research Insight, Strategy and Control Authority, offers practical advice on how to prevent damage from fire, theft or vandalism which costs UK companies more than £100 million every year.

Allister Smith, property risk manager for Norwich Union, said that as the recession increases the number of businesses going bust or downsizing, protecting empty buildings will become increasingly important.

He added: "Although empty, these buildings contain a lot of value in fixtures and fittings and we are seeing an increasing trend in the theft of building fixtures, such as plumbing, electrical cabling and even floorboards."

Norwich Union, which is part of the Aviva insurance group, is currently being rebranded as Aviva.
