Sainsbury's Car Insurance: Claims on the rise after snowfall

Sainsbury's Car Insurance has revealed that the heavy snowfall which affected many parts of the UK last week caused a large rise in the number of car insurance claims.

The supermarket insurer, which is part of Sainsbury's Bank, said that claims totalling £63 million were made by its customers last week, representing a 45 per cent increase on the same week last year.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager, advised motorists only to drive when strictly necessary to avoid accidents on icy roads which could lose them their no-claims bonus.

She added: "Last week was one of the busiest weeks we can remember for car insurance claims.

"Drivers in this country aren't particularly familiar with driving in snow and ice and the conditions in many parts of the country were probably the worst many have experienced."

On one day last week, the AA reported that the number of claims calls handled by its call centres increased to 50 per cent more than normal by mid-afternoon.
