Government tax scheme 'gives boost to businesses'

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced that a government scheme to ease the tax burden on businesses has helped many of them to deal with cash-flow problems.

HMRC said that the business payments support scheme, which enables businesses to contact them quickly about extending their tax deadlines, has given UK businesses a £1 billion cash-flow boost.

The scheme was announced by chancellor Alistair Darling in his pre-Budget report last November.

Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the treasury, said: "This service is delivering the kind of tangible support that business needs at this time.

"I would urge any business anticipating or experiencing difficulties paying their tax to call the helpline and get a quick response tailored to their specific needs."

Alistair Darling also announced measures aimed at easing the tax burden on individuals and families in his pre-Budget report, including a 1.5 per cent cut in VAT.
