Savers should not abandon ISAs, advise experts

Experts from the price comparison website uSwitch.com have advised savers to think carefully before withdrawing their money from individual savings accounts, as they may offer the best interest rates going.

The website said that while interest rates on some savings products have fallen to an average of 0.29 per cent, the interest rate on cash ISAs average 2.05 per cent and the market-leading rate is 4.25 per cent.

According to uSwitch.com, ISA's tax-free status means that the average rate actually equates to an annual percentage rate (APR) of 2.55 per cent for those in the lowest tax bracket and an APR of 3.4 per cent for higher earners.

Rumina Hassam, personal finance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Ditching one of the few tax friendly-government offerings may not be the best course of action for savers", adding: "Low rates will not last forever."

Recent research by Lloyds TSB revealed that many consumers are predicting interest rate rises before the end of the year.
