The credit card provider revealed that its customers spent 168 per cent more on flowers on February 14th than on the previous Saturday.
However, while they remained a popular choice for lovers, the economic downturn took its toll on overall flower sales, which were down by nearly 24 per cent compared to Valentine's Day 2008.
Stewart Roberts, business development director at Barclaycard, said: "People are still keen to splash out on their loved ones on Valentine's Day.
"However, spending appears to be significantly down on last year as consumers tighten their belts."
Research conducted by the price comparison website moneysupermarket.com before the big day revealed that more women were planning on making cut-backs in their Valentine's Day spending than men.
