Alliance & Leicester announces increase in loans

Alliance & Leicester has announced that it plans to increase the amount it lends to small businesses this year in an attempt to help them through the credit crunch.

The bank intends to increase the amount it grants in loans by more than one-quarter compared with 2008, which itself was a record year for Alliance & Leicester's business loans which saw lending increase by 49 per cent.

Steve Pateman, managing director of corporate and commercial banking at UK Commercial Bank, said that cashflow is "the key to business survival" in the current economic climate.

He added: "With many commentators highlighting that business conditions are tough and customer feedback showing that small business owners are feeling the pinch, I would urge businesses to review their banking needs as a matter of priority."

Alliance & Leicester is part of the Santander banking group, which also owns Abbey in the UK.
