Debt charity tells Brits to take responsibility

Britons need to take more responsibility for their actions when it comes to getting into debt, according to one charity.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said that while there are often good reasons why people have gotten into financial trouble, nobody should "bury their heads in the sand" over the matter.

In recent times, the spotlight has fallen upon some providers for allegedly irresponsible lending, but the CCCS claimed that while this cannot be discounted, individuals need to "stand up and take responsibility" for their finances.

"If people have been spending 'willy-nilly' on credit cards, you can't really argue it is the bank's fault for getting them into that debt," argued a spokesperson for the debt service.

Research from Credit Action revealed that the total personal debt in the UK in January was £1.46 trillion - an increase of £42 billion on the same time last year.
