Nationwide: Savings accounts customers see saving as important

A new survey of Nationwide savings account customers has revealed how many people think saving is important.

The poll discovered that just over half of respondents realise the benefits of saving, which is down from two-thirds in July 2008.

Furthermore, almost two-thirds of Nationwide savings account customers thought they were saving less than they needed to, while 52 per cent believed they would still be saving the same amount in six months time.

Andy McQueen, savings director at Nationwide, said: "We're very concerned that since we started monitoring the savings habits of the UK last year, the importance consumers put on saving has been falling."

He added that people are more likely to be considering their short-term needs because of the recession.

Nationwide Building Society recently announced the launch of several new mortgage deals for its customers.
