AA Insurance: Pothole claims treble

AA Insurance has recorded almost three times the number of car insurance claims for damage caused by potholes this year compared with the same period in 2008.

The society estimates that the recent cold weather, including the snow and ice which affected many parts of the UK, has caused around 40 per cent more damage to the country's roads, pushing the number of potholes up to around 1.5 million.

Simon Douglas, the head of AA Insurance, said that the increase is especially remarkable because it takes a "particularly nasty pothole" to cause damage that is worth claiming on car insurance.

Edmund King, the AA's president, added: "Once again the fabric of our local roads is a major cause for concern with surfaces crumbling and drivers and riders at risk of damage to their vehicles and even themselves."

The snow which fell last month also caused an increase in the number of accident claims due to cars losing their grip on snowy roads.
