Men 'save more than women'

Abbey Savings has conducted research which reveals that men in the UK save more on average than women.

The bank compiled statistics which show that, while the average monthly amount saved by people in the UK is £163, men save £196 on average and women save £131, a difference of £65.

Abbey also found that 45 per cent of those it surveyed claim to be saving the same amount as this time last year, compared to 26 per cent who say they are saving less.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, commented: "Despite ever-growing pressures on the pocket, people are still putting some of their hard-earned money aside, whether for the long term, for a specific purpose such as a holiday or a wedding, or for emergencies."

Abbey is owned by the Santander group, which also owns Alliance & Leicester and the savings business of Bradford and Bingley in the UK.
