The Nottingham: New mortgage holders putting off moves

The Nottingham has published research which suggests that many new mortgage holders in the Midlands may be putting off moving into their new homes in order to avoid doing so on Friday 13th.

According to a poll by the building society, 13 per cent fewer home owners will be moving into their new houses this Friday than on a normal day.

Looking back over its statistics for the past eight years, the building society found that Friday 13th has been avoided by house movers more than any other day.

Graham Lang, estate agency operations manager of The Nottingham, said: "People tend to buy into negative superstitions, like having seven years bad luck after smashing a mirror."

However, he added that paraskavedekatriaphobia - the official name for a superstitious fear of Friday 13th - could prove to be a self-fulfilling prophecy for some, as worrying about the dreaded date could lead to lapses of concentration and accidents.
