Abbey: Credit card debt affected by age and sex

Abbey has conducted research which reveals that the amount of debt people rack up on their credit cards differs depending on a person's age and sex.

The bank published a survey which showed that those over the age of 55 are most likely to own a credit card, with 77 per cent claiming they have at least one. This compares to 71 per cent of those aged between 35 and 54 and 58 per cent of those aged between 18 and 34.

Abbey also found that men are likely to have nearly £1,000 more debt on their credit cards than women, with the average figure for the fairer sex being £2,778, compared to £3,627 for men.

A credit card offered by Abbey recently won an award for the best new product on the market at the prestigious Card Awards.
