Saving types identified by Nationwide

Nationwide Building Society has identified five different kinds of savings account customer in an effort to encourage people to develop a savings habit.

Some savers in the UK are pay day depositors, who put money into their savings accounts every time they get paid, according to Nationwide.

Other people fall in to the end of the month sweeper category - savers who transfer any spare cash they have at the end of the month into a savings account.

Nationwide also identified other types such as the lazy saver, who sets up a standing order so they do not have to make any transfers themselves.

The building society explained: "Getting into a savings habit needn't be as hard as you think. The trick is to find a method of saving that suits you and your lifestyle and stick to it. That way, it becomes a habit, rather than a chore."

Nationwide is the UK's largest building society.
