The research company claims that the rising rate of unemployment means that increasing numbers of people in the UK are likely to be looking to buy insurance which will help them pay their bills if they're made redundant.
Brian Brown, head of insight at Defaqto, said that people should think carefully before buying payments protection insurance and make sure they search around to get the best deals.
He added: "At the very least people should think about their priorities. For instance there is little point taking PPI cover for your credit card bill or a loan if you haven't first protected your mortgage."
Recently, the FSA introduced new rules regulating the sale of payments protection insurance after some companies' sales practices were found to be unfair.
