Homeowners 'concerned about redundancy'

Millions of homeowners in the UK are concerned that they or their partner may be made redundant, according to a new poll published today.

The survey, conducted by Which? magazine, revealed that 62 per cent of people in the UK are worried that they or their partner may lose their job, which could put their mortgage payments in jeopardy.

More than four in ten joint income households fear that if one partner became unemployed, they would not be able to meet their monthly mortgage payments.

Doug Taylor, a personal finance campaigner for Which?, said: "With people spending sleepless nights worrying about job losses and repossessions, the industry needs to demonstrate that it wants to win back the trust of the British public by fully embracing government initiatives."

Recent figures published by the Office for National Statistics showed that unemployment is on the rise and there are currently around two million jobless in the UK.
