Some business leaders 'looking forward to deflation'

The Bank of Scotland has conducted a survey which reveals that some small business leaders may actually be looking forward to a period of deflation as it could help reduce the costs of running a company.

According to the poll, more than one quarter of small business owners would view such as period as a positive stimulus for their business.

The bank also found that more than half of business leaders believe that the costs of running a company will remain flat in 2009, meaning that they may be able to satve off any price rises for customers.

Donald Kerr, commercial banking director, Bank of Scotland, said: "Small business owners will clearly have to demonstrate some acute financial acumen in order to balance the need to maintain margins whilst keeping product and service pricing in line with demand."

More Than Business published research earlier this month which showed that UK enterprises saw their costs drop by an average of 2.9 per cent in the final quarter of 2008.
