The bank calculated that people in the UK are saving an average of £1,746 per year, meaning that the average salary of £25,100 will go seven per cent further.
On average, people have managed to cut their weekly food bills by £17.10, reduce their travel expenses by £17.27 and their weekly entertainment budget by £19.47.
Furthermore, Brits will make spend around £229 less on their holidays this year than they did last year.
Callum Gibson, head of credit cards at Abbey, said that during the credit crunch, "it's not surprising that Britons are becoming more astute about how they shop and are prepared to shop around and economise to make their money go further".
Recently, the chief executive of currency exchange website FairFX said he had noticed a significant increase in the number of people choosing to search around for the best deals on travel money, thus helping them save on their holidays.
