Inflation gathers pace again

The latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that inflation increased in February at a faster rate than it did the previous month.

Statistics show that the consumer price index, the government's preferred method measuring inflation, rose by 3.2 per cent last month, compared to a three per cent rise in January.

The news came as a surprise to many city economists, who had predicted that inflation would continue the downward trend it had followed in previous months.

In its official report, the ONS said: "The largest upward contribution to the change in the CPI annual rate came from food and non-alcoholic beverages.

"There were small upward contributions from fruit, mineral waters, soft drinks and juices, bread and cereals, and meat."

The basket used by the ONS to calculate the average rise in the price of consumer goods included Blu-ray discs, Rose wine and MP4 players this year for the first time.
