Nationwide says happy birthday to Isas

The release of Britney Spears' debut album and Lance Armstrong's victory at the Tour de France - these are just two of the epochal moments that happened in the same year that individual savings accounts (Isas) were launched.

Nationwide has wished Isas a happy tenth birthday, claiming that savers who have made full use of their cash Isa allowance since 1999 may have saved £39,588 by the end of this year.

Isas were introduced in the same year that the UK witnessed the first solar eclipse in 70 years and last won the Eurovision Song Contest, when Katrina and the Waves brought home the prize.

"Over the last ten years, millions of people across the country have benefited from the tax-efficient savings that an Isa offers," said Andy McQueen, savings and mortgages director at Nationwide.

"Although interest rates are at an historic low, putting money aside on a regular basis is very important."

Meanwhile, Nationwide's home insurance was recently given a five-star rating by Defaqto.
