Nationwide announces launch of charitable programmes

Nationwide has announced that £3.2 million in grants will be made available to help tackle the issues of financial exclusion and housing.

Via its Nationwide Foundation, the building society will offer three-year grants of up to £300,000 to registered charities that have incomes below £10 million.

Additionally, grants of up to £5,000 will be made available to charities with incomes no higher than £500,000.

Lisa Parker, chief executive of the foundation, said that the new programme was launched to help those in most need during the recession.

"Without financial education many people will not know how to survive the current harsh economic realities, which is why we are paying particular attention to the minority groups who are most vulnerable and most in need," she added.

In other news at Nationwide, the society recently announced interest rate reductions on its savings accounts of 0.25 per cent on average.
