Rics comments on Halifax house price index

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has reiterated its warning that the UK housing market is not close to recovery, following the publication of the latest Halifax house price index.

A statement from the institution advised home owners and the industry not to read too much into Nationwide's house price data this week, after the building society recorded a 0.9 per cent increase in property values between February and March.

That figure has been countered by Halifax which claims that the monthly average decreased by 1.9 per cent. Rics believes these latest figures back up its opinion that it is too early to assume that prices have bottomed out.

Nevertheless, the body is optimistic that despite the uncertainty over prices and the low level of turnover in the market, transaction activity is likely to increase from this point onwards.
