'Complacency' over emergency savings revealed

New Research conducted by National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has revealed a significant degree of complacency in the UK when it comes to putting money away for a rainy day.

According to the study, 32 per cent of people have given little thought to what they would do in case of an emergency, while the same percentage claimed they have no savings put in place should an unexpected yet costly incident occur.

Of those who do have savings to deal with such events, more than a fifth said they do not keep the funds in a separate account, making it difficult for them to resist the temptation to dip into them.

NS&I senior savings strategist Dax Harkins commented: "It's essential that we are all prepared for any emergency that will require immediate access to money, and ensure we are saving enough to cover us in a crisis."

Despite this, NS&I recently revealed that regular savers have become more committed to putting money aside, as a result of the economic downturn.
