Car insurance premiums 'increase convictions'

Research by moneysupermarket.com has revealed that car insurance premiums increase dramatically as a result of convictions for driving offences.

The price comparison site calculated that motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol can expect their premiums to rise by an average of 48 per cent and that some insurance companies will refuse to cover them at all.

According to the survey, motorists caught speeding once can expect their average quoted premium to rise by around five per cent. If they are caught three times this figure will increase to 33 per cent.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "The rules of the road are there for a reason, especially when it comes to drink-driving.

"It's not surprising that insurers take such a harsh view of those caught driving under the influence."

Recently, Norwich Union suggested that the number of accidents caused by driver fatigue may increase during the recession, which could drive average insurance premiums up further as insurance companies pass on their additional costs.
