Barclays: Brits predict stock market will remain weak

Barclays has conducted a survey which reveals that many people in the UK believe the stock market will remain weak for the remainder of 2009.

The poll revealed that the average total prediction for the total value of the FTSE 100 will be 3729 points by the end of this year, which does not represent a significant increase on its current value.

Barclays' survey also revealed that many people look to the FTSE 100 for significant signs of overall economic recovery, with 20 per cent saying they considered it to be the best indicator, compared to 14 per cent who look to the housing market.

Alison Tattersall, head of customer and proposition at Barclays Financial Planning, said: "Our research shows the majority of people seem to be limiting their investment options because of market uncertainty."

Alistair Darling's Budget announcement, which will take place next week, is likely to have an effect on the value of the FTSE 100.
