Handbag theft costs Brits £582 million

Research by Direct Line has revealed that stolen handbags have cost the UK £582 million in recent years.

The insurer conducted a poll which revealed that more than one-fifth of women have had their handbags stolen and that nine per cent of these thefts have taken place in the last year.

Direct Line calculated that each time a bag is stolen women are faced with an average bill of £109 to replace the item and its contents, although some handbags cost a lot more.

Frances Browning, spokesperson for Direct Line Home Insurance, said: "Many women carry around personal possessions in their handbags that can add up to a small fortune, along with items of sentimental value."

While many women have their handbags stolen from public places, recent research by Abbey revealed that domestic burglaries are likely to become more frequent during the recession, which could put people's bags at risk in the home.
