What do people want from the Budget?

Employment is a key concern among Britons for next week's Budget, according to new research.

A street poll carried out by Adfero in Leeds city centre found that most people were concerned with jobs being found as the recession goes on.

Nearly all (90 per cent) of those polled said that they hoped the second Budget statement, which the chancellor will deliver next week, would outline assistance for unemployed people and those on low incomes.

Just one per cent did not hold such a hope, while nine per cent were not sure.

Social worker Tyrell Simmards, 32, stated: "I just want a job out of the budget. [The government should] improve social welfare, help young people and single parents get jobs, and put money into run-down areas."

Reports have said that Alistair Darling will unveil proposals to help the environmental impact of the carbon economy and alleviate the problems of unemployment.
