The list includes fitting robust locks to all windows as well as doors, particularly those on the ground floor. The insurer also recommends installing security lights outside any property and putting gravel down on the driveway, as the crunching of footsteps can help warn of the presence of intruders.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Wherever the surroundings, people need to be aware of the steps they can take to protect themselves in and about their home."
Recently, the Home Office announced that it would be publishing a pack filled with tips on how best to secure houses against domestic break-ins.
The pack includes money off coupons which can be used to buy home security products from shops such as B&Q.
