Smile increases credit card charges

Smile has announced that it will increase the amount it charges customers to withdraw cash on their credit cards, according to uSwitch.com.

The price comparison site claims that the online bank will increase the minimum amount it charges customers from 2.5 per cent to three per cent from July 1st this year.

According to uSwitch.com, the move by the internet subsidiary of the Co-operative Bank follows a trend which has seen providers increase their charges by an average of 3.05 per cent each year since 2007.

Louise Bond, personal finance manager at uSwitch.com, said: "We strongly advise customers not to use this facility on any credit card unless they are really desperate for the cash.

"Interest is applied to credit card cash withdrawals from the day they are made."

Recently, Egg announced it would also increase the fees it charges credit card customers who withdraw cash.
