Many UK motorists driving illegally, says survey

A recent survey conducted by uSwitch.com has revealed that many motorists in the UK are driving their cars illegally because they forget to have their MOTs renewed.

The poll revealed that nearly two-thirds of UK drivers have taken a car out onto the roads without a valid MOT, which could leave them facing a fine of up to £1,000.

According to the price comparison site, 79 per cent of these neglectful motorists blame the fault on sheer absent-mindedness, while 11 per cent claim that a change of car is responsible for forgetting the renewal date.

Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Life moves at a pretty fast pace and so it is understandable that many consumers may find themselves losing track of deadlines and commitments."

However, he added that the financial consequences of forgetting to get an MOT could leave drivers with "a hefty price to pay".

Driving without a valid MOT can also invalidate car insurance policies, potentially adding to the illegality of the offence.
