ABI: PMI more popular despite recession

Private medical insurance (PMI) is becoming more popular with people in the UK despite the recession, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The ABI based this assertion on figures released recently which reveal that around 7.3 million people in the UK were covered by private health insurance policies last year, which represents an increase of 2.7 per cent on 2007's statistics.

This figure includes some 6.2 million who were covered by personal or corporate PMI policies and around 1.1 million who were insured by healthcare trust arrangements.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "PMI is good for companies and the economy because it enables employees to get back to work after illness or injury as quickly as possible."

He claimed that this factor may be responsible for the rise in the number of people covered by corporate policies.

Private healthcare policies can enable holders to access treatment and drugs which may not be available on the NHS.
