Experian: Car scrappage scheme likely to be popular

Experian has conducted research which reveals that the government's recently-announced car scrappage scheme is likely to prove popular with UK motorists.

The car insurance provider calculated that around 1.5 million drivers are likely to take advantage of the initiative which offers them a grant of £2,000 towards the purchase of a new set of wheels if they scrap a vehicle that is more than ten years old.

Experian calculated that of the 7.1 million cars which may be eligible for the scheme, some 15 per cent are worth more than £2,000, but welcomed the scheme as a positive move for many motorists.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of the company's business information and automotive division, added: "This scheme should help stimulate demand across the car market, as well as assist the environment by removing older, potentially more polluting vehicles from UK roads."

A similar scheme implemented by the German government has already provided a boost to the car manufacturing industry in the country.
