Travel insurance prices 'hiked overnight'

Moneysupermarket.com has conducted a survey which revealed that travel insurance prices can increase dramatically for tourists after their 66th birthday.

The price comparison site's research revealed [past] that the average cost of an annual multi-trip policy is 106 per cent higher for a 66-year-old than for a 65-year old, meaning they could be left paying more than twice as much.

Moneysupermarket.com claimed that the industry is rife with age discrimination.

Maxine Baker, travel insurance manager at the website, said: "Brits turning 66 will be shocked to see an overnight hike in the cost of their travel insurance, with no further medical evidence to suggest they might be at higher risk."

She added that she hoped to see a change in attitude towards older travellers.

Recently, Alistair Darling announced several measures aimed specifically at helping old people financially as part of this year's Budget, though these did not include any travel insurance regulation.
