AA issues warning to drivers

The AA, one of the UK's leading providers of car insurance, has advised drivers hitting the roads this bank holiday weekend to take regular breaks in order to avoid accidents.

According to research conducted by the insurer, one in ten motorists has nodded off at the wheel at some point on a long journey.

The AA also found that nearly one quarter of motorists only ever stop for a quick toilet break and one in 20 people do not stop at all when driving long distances.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, said: "The risk of death or serious injury from falling asleep at the wheel is greater as the grim fact is that these accidents tend to happen at higher speed, as drivers don't brake before crashing."

Recently, a survey of prices in service stations by Which? magazine revealed that it may be cheaper to buy snacks before setting off on a journey and then stop to eat them.
