UK council tax is 'most hated'

Research published today has revealed that council tax is the most hated levy imposed by the government in the UK.

In a poll conducted by unbiased.co.uk, council tax was found to be the tax most resented no hyphen by Brits, with 43 per cent of those surveyed putting it near the top of the list of their bugbears.

Fuel duty, which was last year's most hated tax, has now fallen to second and Alistair Darling's VAT cut has meant that goods and services tax is also less hated than last year.

David Elms, chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk, said the government needs to find ways of raising revenue during the economic crisis.

He added: "Unfortunately this may well mean higher personal tax which puts even more strain on people's finances at a time when they are trying to make their money stretch further."

Council tax was introduced by the Conservative government of the early 90s.
