AA Insurance predicts possible peak in bike thefts

AA Insurance has claimed that the number of bicycles stolen in the UK may increase significantly this summer as the recession bites.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "We could see a Himalayan peak in cycle theft this summer as the recession makes the bike an ever more sought-after item."

The organisation cited statistics from the Home Office's British Crime Survey which suggest that the period between June and October is usually the busiest time for bicycle theft.

On top of this, the recession has seen an upsurge in bike sales this year, meaning there are more bikes on the streets for thieves to get hold of.

Mr Douglas said that it is more important than ever to check whether bicycles are covered under home insurance policies. He cited the case of the Tory leader David Cameron as one where insurance is not guaranteed.

Mr Cameron had his bike stolen recently for the second time in ten months.
