The insurer conducted a survey which revealed that wedding guests spend an average of £79 each on a gift, meaning that a wedding with 50 guests could leave couples with extra possessions worth £3,950.
On top of this, Direct Line said that engaged couples typically spend around £4,000 on items in the build-up to their weddings.
Andrew Lowe, head of Home Insurance at Direct Line, said: "The costs of the wedding dress, flowers, jewellery and outfits for the wedding party can easily run to many thousands of pounds, so it will be a shrewd newlywed who checks their insurance policy."
Recently, Sainsbury's Home Insurance calculated that an average household's contents would cost around £45,000 to replace completely.
