Car insurance confusion could lead many British motorists down the wrong financial road when they head abroad this year.

That is the warning of moneysupermarket.com, which claims that many drivers who plan to take a ride while on holiday are unaware of what cover their car insurance policy provides.

Almost half (49 per cent) of respondents in a poll by the firm said that they do not know how much protection they will get once out of the country - while 30 per cent believe that a fully comprehensive policy will apply overseas just as it does in the UK.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, advised that motorists should check the small print of their cover before driving abroad.

"If you were unfortunate enough to have a crash whilst abroad and were only covered for third party, you could find your great holiday getaway turns into an expensive motoring nightmare," he added.

Other advice issued by the company included its assertion that those who wish to pay car insurance in monthly installments should shop around for the best deals.
