The most popular means conducted was to undertake a personal search of the neighbourhood - an approach deployed by 68 per cent of people who have lost pets in the last five years.
Almost as many (65 per cent) quizzed neighbours for details and 40 per cent headed to the RSPCA or local cats' and dogs' homes.
Informing the police, offering rewards and placing advertisements in the local newspaper were carried out by 15 per cent, 13 per cent and eight per cent respectively.
Sainsbury's Pet Insurance provides up to £1,000 towards advertising costs for lost animals and £750 compensation should the policy holder never be reunited with their pet.
Another pet insurance survey carried out by the company found that 12 per cent of cats and dogs under the age of three suffer from medical conditions that can recur or cause other illnesses in later life.
